Nivea Hamilton, born March 24, 1982, professionally known as Nivea, is an R&B singer who first appeared on rapper Mystikal’s 2000 single ‘Danger (Been So Long)’.
Signed by Jive Records, Nivea released her debut single, “Don’t Mess With The Radio”, in 2001. Her debut album ‘Nivea’ was originally scheduled for September 2001 was subsequently delayed until the following year. After some overseas success with the Australian release of the album, Nivea was reintroduced in the U.S. in 2002 with her second single, ‘Don’t Mess With My Man’ featuring Brian and Brandon Casey (of R&B group Jagged Edge), her biggest hit to date, reaching #8 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, #1 on the Billboard Singles Sales Chart, and earning a 2003 Grammy Award nomination for “Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal”.
‘Nivea’ was released in the US in December 2002. The album had minor success, reaching #35 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums, and also featuring in the Billboard Top 100. Her third single “Laundromat”, which featured singer R. Kelly, was released at a time when Kelly was facing sexual allegations. Nick Cannon was instead featured in the music video as the boyfriend character. The next singles, “Ya Ya Ya” and “25 Reasons”, were only released to radio.
In 2004, Nivea married music producer Terius “The-Dream” Nash. In 2005, the Lil’ Jon-produced single ‘Okay’ was chosen as the lead single from her second album ‘Complicated’, and achieved top 10 successes at Urban and Rhythmic radio. ‘Complicated’ was released in May 2005 with very little promotion. Nevertheless, the album reached #37 on the Billboard Top 100 albums, surpassing her debut.
Her pregnancy caused Jive Records to put promotional plans for the album on hold, but by the time of her child’s birth, Jive had given up on the project. Plans to release second and third singles, the Jermaine Dupri-produced ‘Parking Lot’ and ‘Complicated’, both fell through. Nivea requested her release from Jive Records in 2005.
After a break raising her first daughter, Navy, Nivea released her third album ‘Animalistic’ in 2006 in Japan, on Formula Records. The album was again primarily produced by her then-husband Terius “The-Dream” Nash. Plans for an American re-release surfaced, but never came to fruition. The rumoured lead single for the American release, a song titled ‘Hood Girl’, said to feature Lil’ Kim and Missy Elliott, was never heard, with the release date continuously pushed back until it was cancelled.
Nivea and The-Dream then gave birth to twin boys in April 2006, Christian and London. The couple divorced in December 2007, after being married for two years.
After taking time out with her children, Nivea returned to the spotlight in early 2010 with a remix to Timbaland & Drake’s ‘Say Something’ with rapper Rasheeda. On Valentine’s Day 2010, a buzz single and video, ‘Love Hurts’ was released online. Nivea went on to release her very first mixtape, Nivea Undercover, in September 2011. In November 2013, Nivea released a buzz single, ‘Loud Blunt’. Nivea’s fourth studio album is due to be released at the top of 2015, titled ‘Nivea Revealed’, (previously titled ‘Purple Heart’).
